Nile Breweries Limited has celebrated 75 years of operations in Uganda, revealing that it paid more than Shs5 trillion in taxes between 2010 and 2025. The company said annual tax payments have exceeded Shs450 billion since 2024. The brewer launched its anniversary celebrations at its Jinja plant, marking its establishment in 1951.
The company's tax contribution extends beyond direct payments to government. Emmanuel Njuki, the company's Head of Corporate and Legal Affairs, explained that distributors and bar owners in its retail network also pay taxes on their sales. The brewer operates two facilities with combined production capacity of approximately three million hectolitres annually, with the Jinja plant producing over 1.9 million hectolitres and the Mbarara facility producing 1.1 million hectolitres.
Nile Breweries supports Uganda's agricultural sector through its Local Raw Material programme, which works with approximately 25,000 farmers supplying barley, sorghum, cassava and maize. The company sources more than 98 per cent of its raw materials locally, spending over Shs156 billion annually on locally sourced inputs. Managing Director Nkanyiso Mncwabe said the company improved its water use by over 20 per cent per hectolitre of production since 2017, with 100 per cent of communities in high-stress water areas supported by the company's initiatives showing measurable improvements in water availability and quality in 2025.
Nile Breweries is now part of global brewing group AB InBev following partnerships established in 1997. The company produces brands including Nile Special, Club Pilsener and Eagle Lager.
