Lira businessman and school inspector charged with fraud in Kampala

A businessman and schools inspector have been accused of obtaining over Shs4 million through deception and false claims.

Ambrose Okot, a 42-year-old businessman from Lira City, and Tom Ronald Omara, a 45-year-old school inspector, appeared at City Hall Court in Kampala charged with obtaining money by false pretences, conspiracy to commit a felony and personation. The charges relate to alleged incidents in June 2026 and were heard before Senior Magistrate Edgar Karakire.

Okot is accused of obtaining Shs500,000 from one person at Mulago Cancer Institute by claiming he could resolve cases involving student numbers at Lango College. He is also alleged to have obtained Shs1.5 million from another person in Ntilda by promising to arrange a relative's transfer to a different location.

The prosecution alleges that Okot and Omara together obtained Shs2 million in Lira City by claiming they would register private Primary Leaving Examination candidates at Olaka Child Care Primary School as Universal Primary Education candidates. Okot additionally faces a personation charge, accused of falsely presenting himself as a legal officer of the Uganda National Examinations Board to obtain money.

The court has not yet disclosed details of the accused persons' pleas, bail decisions or subsequent orders. Both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court.
