MultiChoice Uganda has restructured its entire DStv package line-up, renaming all four tiers and introducing dedicated sports offerings, with the changes taking effect on November 5. The company announced the revamp at its head offices on Sunday, saying it reflects changing viewing habits and customer feedback. DStv Access will become DStv Starter, DStv Family will transition to DStv Select, DStv Compact will become DStv Sports, and DStv Premium will be renamed DStv Ultimate. Hassan Saleh, CEO of MultiChoice Uganda, said the new packages provide subscribers with tailored options. "Our focus is on giving subscribers better value and access to the entertainment they love," he said. "We've reimagined our packages to better reflect how customers watch today, with tailored options specifically for general entertainment and sports fans."
The entry-level DStv Starter package will include 10 additional channels compared with its predecessor, including a new SuperSport KICKOFF channel offering selected football matches from the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. DStv Select, the mid-tier option, will feature movie channels, local and international series, selected football and other sporting content, alongside kids' programming. Movie offerings will refresh with M-Net Movies+, M-Net Stars and M-Net Legends, providing a wider selection of films and quicker access to new releases. The new DStv Sports package marks the first option specifically designed around sports enthusiasts, offering 17 sports channels covering every Premier League and UEFA Champions League match, cricket previously available only on DStv Premium, international club rugby, WWE and UFC. DStv Sports will also include all general entertainment channels from DStv Select. DStv Ultimate, the top tier, will retain its position as the most comprehensive package, combining DStv Sports content with additional premium events including Formula 1, MotoGP, Grand Slam tennis and golf majors.
MultiChoice is also launching SuperSport Swahili, a dedicated 24-hour sports channel for East African audiences in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The channel will feature Swahili commentary and analysis across international and locally relevant sporting events including the Premier League, UEFA competitions, La Liga, Serie A, international football, athletics, UFC and WWE. The Uganda Communications Commission welcomed the restructuring. Julianne Mweheire, Director of Industry Affairs and Content Development at UCC, said the move demonstrated the importance of listening to consumers. "For the first time, we are not talking about economics, we are talking about customers speaking and the entity listening," she said. "I congratulate MultiChoice Uganda for being sensitive to the needs of their customers."
Despite the expanded international sports offering, MultiChoice said local content remains central to its strategy. The company plans to continue investing in original productions reflecting African experiences, with upcoming titles including Kampala Crème Season 4, Musama, Home of Our Stars Season 4, Tie the Knot, and the Short and Byg Show, a podcast hosted by social media personalities Isaac Katende and Shamim Mayanja. These productions will complement international films, series and sporting events within the refreshed portfolio. The package restructuring comes as MultiChoice, which is integrated with Canal+, seeks to adapt international content to local audiences through regional-language programming and tailored entertainment options.
