BUA Cement workers seek unpaid allocations after 24 years

Former staff of BUA Cement's predecessor company are appealing for settlement of cement allocations owed since 1999.

Members of the Association of Voluntarily Disengaged Staff of BUA Cement Company in Sokoto have appealed to Abdul Samad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Group, to settle unpaid cement allocations dating back to 1999. The former workers, who voluntarily left their positions in August 2001, say they were never paid allocations for the years 1999, 2000 and 2001, a debt that has remained outstanding for over two decades.

The appeal was made in a letter dated October 10, 2026, signed by Mallam Abdullahi Abubakar, Chairman of the association, and Leonard A. Ameh, its Secretary, and addressed to the Managing Director of BUA Cement Plc at its Kalambaina Road office in Sokoto. The former workers were employed by the Cement Company of Northern Nigeria Plc, which is now BUA Cement Plc, and served the company before their disengagement.

According to the association, many of the affected former staff members are now facing severe economic hardship and struggling to meet basic family needs. The group represents widows and orphans of deceased colleagues, as well as elderly members dealing with terminal illnesses. Association Chairman Abubakar said the long wait for settlement has left many unable to provide for their families.

The disengaged workers have appealed to Rabiu to balance fairness with compassion and approve settlement of the outstanding allocations to ease their suffering. They have tendered an apology for any way they may have wronged the company and expressed readiness to accept any out-of-court settlement or peaceful resolution that BUA proposes to close the matter. The association also prayed for the continued growth of BUA under Rabiu's leadership.
