Tanzania pursues 41 million dollars in environment funding

Tanzania is seeking up to 41 million US dollars in environmental financing through a global facility to strengthen conservation and climate resilience.

Tanzania is pursuing up to 41 million US dollars in environmental financing under the ninth replenishment cycle of the Global Environment Facility, a senior government official said. The funding would support biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and efforts to combat land degradation. Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Vice-President's Office Dr Maduhu Kazi announced the initiative during a national dialogue in Dar es Salaam, saying the country had secured an initial allocation of 16.04 million US dollars.

The remaining potential funding comes from two additional sources. Tanzania could access up to 20 million US dollars from the Least Developed Countries Fund and five million US dollars from the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund. The total would bring available resources to 41 million US dollars, supporting Tanzania Development Vision 2050.

Under the previous funding cycle, Tanzania secured approximately 53 million US dollars, with 23.9 million US dollars allocated to biodiversity conservation. Land degradation and climate change each received 4.8 million US dollars. Dr Kazi said lessons from earlier cycles should guide preparation of new projects, emphasising interventions that deliver environmental and development benefits.

Officials stressed that consultations with stakeholders are essential for identifying priorities. Ms Kemilembe Mutasa, Director of Environment in the Vice-President's Office, said involving government institutions, development partners, civil society, the private sector, academia and research institutions would strengthen coordination and shared responsibility in implementing environmental programmes.
