BUA Cement profit jumps 60% to N463bn in nine months

The cement maker's earnings growth outpaced revenue gains, as operational efficiency improvements offset rising energy costs across the period.

BUA Cement reported profit after tax of N463 billion for the nine months ended September 2026, a 60 per cent increase from N289.6 billion in the same period a year earlier, the company said. Profit before tax rose 64.4 per cent to N556.7 billion from N338.6 billion, reflecting stronger underlying performance across the business.

Revenue grew 26.5 per cent to N1.1 trillion, driven by expansion in bulk cement sales, despite headwinds from heavy rainfall and poor road conditions that affected the period. The company achieved three consecutive quarters of volume growth compared with 2025, demonstrating resilience in a challenging environment. Managing Director and Chief Executive Yusuf Binji said the results showed the company had "surpassed our quarterly performances of 2025 through the addition of bulk customers, the acquisition of LNG trucks, and the further restructuring of our logistics operations."

Profitability gains came despite cost pressures. Cost of sales rose 8.8 per cent to N466.4 billion, partly due to adverse energy mix, operational challenges and elevated prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. However, gross profit margins expanded to 57.1 per cent from 50.1 per cent, while EBITDA margins improved by 6.3 percentage points to 52.7 per cent, supported by lower operations and maintenance service charges and cost savings elsewhere.

The company attributed operational efficiency improvements to investment in LNG trucks, which the company said were environmentally friendly and would reduce its carbon footprint while harnessing Nigeria's gas reserves. Return on Equity and Asset improved to 63 per cent and 27.4 per cent respectively. Binji stated that looking ahead to the fourth quarter, the company remained committed to achieving objectives "through profitable partnerships with our distributors and sustained efforts to reduce our cost to serve."
