Carrefour funds school renovation via customer donations scheme

Carrefour Uganda has renovated a facility run by In Need Home, a community organisation in Kampala, using money raised through its Round Up Your Bill initiative.

Carrefour Uganda completed renovations at In Need Home, which supports vulnerable children and families in Namuwongo, Kampala, on October 16, 2026. The work included refurbishing classrooms, offices and sanitation facilities, as well as repairing roofs, windows, ceilings, doors and water gutters. The building was also replastered and repainted.

In Need Home Executive Director Michael Tumwesigye said the improvements had enhanced safety and hygiene at the facility. He highlighted specific upgrades, including replacing bamboo stairs with terrazzo-finished ones and installing modern flushing toilets. The organisation currently houses 45 children and supports a total of 165, including those enrolled in different schools. Many of the children served are orphans living with HIV from disadvantaged communities.

The Round Up Your Bill scheme allows Carrefour customers to voluntarily round up their purchases at checkout, with the extra amounts funding community projects. Carrefour Uganda said the initiative had raised more than 630 million shillings to date and had supported six projects across the country. The programme is part of parent company Majid Al Futtaim's sustainability strategy, which emphasises education, health, community development and economic empowerment in its operating markets.
