Bank of India announced on October 14, 2026 that it has launched debit card services in Uganda by partnering with Interswitch, the payments company. The move brings card-based banking to Bank of India customers, many of whom previously had to visit branches to access their accounts. Customers can now obtain Verve debit cards from any Bank of India branch and use them to withdraw cash from more than 800 Interswitch-enabled ATMs and make payments at over 20,000 merchant locations across the country.
Moris Segu ya, Interswitch Uganda's country general manager, said the partnership would expand access to card payments while strengthening Uganda's digital payments infrastructure. He noted that adding more financial institutions to the Verve network would increase its reach and provide more customers with access to electronic payment services. Bank of India managing director Srikant Ashok Wikhe described the partnership as part of the bank's effort to improve access to financial services through digital banking and move towards a customer-centred approach.
Verve International, a subsidiary of Interswitch Group, provides payment card solutions to financial institutions, businesses and consumers across Africa. Interswitch, founded in 2002, provides electronic payment processing and switching services across the continent. The partnership reflects broader moves by financial institutions to expand digital payment options and reduce dependence on cash and branch-based transactions.
