Tanzania mobilises funds at IMF and World Bank meetings

Tanzania is using the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok to secure financing for development projects and strengthen ties with international lenders.

Tanzania is participating in the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Annual Meetings, which started today in Bangkok, Thailand, to raise resources for national development projects. Finance Minister Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar said the country's involvement aims to strengthen economic diplomacy and ensure proper management of external financing. The government will seek General Budget Support to fund various development programmes and expects to benefit from high-level discussions with leaders of both institutions.

A key priority for Tanzania is implementing the 21st replenishment of the International Development Association, which provides concessional financing. The government has submitted an initial list of projects expected to receive World Bank funding to ensure national priority projects secure necessary resources. Beyond the World Bank, Tanzania is broadening cooperation with other development partners and continuing discussions with credit rating agencies Moody's and Fitch, while seeking new lenders to expand financing access.

Tanzania's Honorary Consul in Thailand said the country is also strengthening economic ties through trade, tourism and health cooperation. Airlines have shown interest in establishing direct flights to Tanzania following tourism promotion efforts in Southeast Asian markets. Between December last year and June this year, Tanzanians spent approximately 150 million Thai baht on medical treatment in Thailand, ranking the country second in Africa for medical tourism.

A deputy chairperson of Parliament's Budget Committee commended the Finance Ministry for involving Parliament in the meetings, saying engagement will support resource mobilisation for implementing Dira 2050 and promoting economic growth. The annual meetings run until October 18.
