Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) is constructing a 33-kilovolt electricity transmission line from Mkuranga District in Coast Region to Mafia Island via an underwater cable, as part of a wider regional electricity expansion programme. The project, coordinated by engineer Joffrey Katoto, is one of three major components in a total investment of 283 million US dollars aimed at strengthening electricity connectivity across the archipelago and mainland areas.
The complete project includes a 132-kilovolt transmission line from Tanga to Pemba and a 220-kilovolt transmission line from Ununio to Unguja. According to TANESCO, the infrastructure is intended to strengthen electricity connectivity and improve power supply across all targeted areas. The initiative is expected to improve electricity supply to Mkuranga residents, stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities, particularly during the implementation phase.
Mkuranga District Administrative Secretary Omary Said expressed support for the project during a public awareness seminar, commending TANESCO for continuing to expand electricity infrastructure. He stated that the project would open up more opportunities for economic activities, especially in areas with limited access to reliable power, and would accelerate socio-economic development in the district. Mr Said assured TANESCO of the district's continued cooperation to ensure the project meets required quality standards and is completed successfully.
The seminar was part of preparations designed to strengthen cooperation between TANESCO, government leaders and local communities. Some residents and village leaders from affected areas said the seminar had helped them understand the proposed transmission route, areas likely to be affected and procedures for addressing challenges during implementation. The information would enable communities to prepare for the project and cooperate with relevant authorities to minimise potential disruptions.
For people in Mkuranga and surrounding regions, the project means improved access to reliable electricity that could enable businesses to operate more consistently and boost household connectivity in areas that currently have limited power supply.
