Tanzania targets one trillion dollar economy by 2050

The government is implementing development plans to grow the economy from $90bn today to $1 trillion in 25 years.

Tanzania's government is targeting economic growth of more than tenfold over the next 25 years as it pursues an ambitious development agenda. According to Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa, the economy currently stands at approximately 90 billion US dollars and the government aims to expand it to one trillion US dollars by 2050. To achieve this goal, the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has begun implementing the National Development Vision 2050 and the Fourth Development Plan during the 2026/2027 financial year.

Msigwa stressed that reaching these economic targets depends heavily on maintaining peace and stability across the country. He told media outlets in Dodoma that a secure environment is essential for citizens to conduct daily activities and for the government to carry out development projects without disruption. The spokesperson emphasised that citizens must engage in productive work across agriculture, trade, education and healthcare while respecting the law and using lawful channels to address grievances rather than fueling conflict.

Msigwa called on the public to support national unity and security efforts, particularly young people and social media users. He urged them to verify information before sharing it and to avoid content that incites violence. The government and security organs will continue protecting citizens, their property and the country's borders, he said, while relevant authorities monitor published content and actions that could violate the law.

For savers, borrowers and business owners in Tanzania, sustained economic growth to this scale would require decades of consistent expansion, job creation and rising incomes, depending on both government policy implementation and private sector investment in a stable operating environment.
