Tanzania pushes forward with 37.5bn shilling water project in Mwanza

A government-funded water pipeline project in Mwanza Region has reached nearly half completion and is expected to serve over 85,000 people.

A piped water project linking several communities in Misungwi District to Sumve has reached 46 per cent completion, according to the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA). The 37.55 billion shilling scheme is designed to bring clean and safe water to more than 85,468 people across Mwanza Region. The project began in February 2023 and is scheduled to finish in December 2027. The planned distribution network will extend to areas including Kolomije and Bugomba.

The initiative aims to reduce the distance residents, particularly women and girls, must travel to collect water. Long journeys to water sources currently prevent many from attending school, managing household tasks or working. Government officials say the project reflects their commitment to improving access to essential services in underserved areas. Minister Paul Makonda, speaking on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, urged those managing the project to meet the completion deadline so residents can begin using the new water supply.

Officials responsible for the project have been asked to ensure the work stays on schedule and that the benefits reach communities as planned.
