Trump exempts Canadian farm goods from tariffs to aid Collins

The president removed duties on nine agricultural products as the Maine Republican senator fights a tight re-election race in a state dependent on cross-border trade.

President Trump dropped tariffs on Canadian agricultural products on Friday, citing a need to 'better serve the public interest,' according to a White House statement. The move exempts nine products including blueberries, potatoes, apples and seaweed, and comes as a political boost to Susan Collins, the Republican senator for Maine who faces a critical re-election campaign. Collins announced the exemptions after what she described as repeated conversations with administration officials including Ambassador Greer and Secretary Lutnick about tariff relief for products important to Maine's economy.

The White House also removed certain processing equipment from its tariffs, including plywood sheets, packing boxes, paper products and specific machinery. Collins said many of Maine's farmers depend on specialized equipment and materials from Canada that are either unavailable from American suppliers or would cost significantly more to replace. She stated she would continue working with administration officials to seek additional relief and encourage a broader trade agreement with Canada, describing it as 'our neighbor, ally, and largest trading partner.'

Maine's economy relies heavily on trade with Canada, and industries central to the state's history including logging, lobstering and fishing were expected to face hardship from earlier tariff announcements. The tariff dispute has become a flashpoint in a state considered politically independent-minded. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said American tariffs have hurt households on both sides of the border, citing a 10% fall in auto exports to the US and more than 20% decline in US exports to Canada. Trump imposed a 50% tariff on certain Canadian goods beginning 22 August, prompting Canada to announce retaliatory tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on $20bn of American goods, though Canada later withdrew tariffs on American seafood.

Collins, who has served in the Senate for nearly 30 years, is running for re-election against Troy Jackson, a Democrat and former Maine state senator who previously worked as a logger. The race is considered a toss-up and is crucial to Democratic hopes of controlling the chamber. Jackson has frequently attacked Collins's record on Trump's policies and her 2018 vote confirming Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, whose confirmation preceded the court's overturning of Roe v Wade. At a televised debate earlier this month, Jackson said the election was 'about who you stand with when it matters.'

For Maine savers and borrowers, the tariff exemptions may reduce costs for agricultural products and business materials that depend on Canadian imports, though broader trade uncertainty remains as negotiations continue.
