Edo State is pursuing a partnership with Botswana to develop its agriculture and livestock sectors as it prepares for an International Agricultural and Livestock Investment Summit. A delegation from the state met with Botswana's High Commissioner to Nigeria, Philada Kereng, at the High Commission in Abuja on Friday. The Edo team included the Commissioners for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Jerry Uwangue, and Livestock Development, Mr Ohimai Ehijimetor, alongside the Special Adviser on Livestock Development, Roland Igbadumhe, and other officials.
The High Commissioner welcomed Edo's livestock development efforts and suggested the state explore investment opportunities in agro-tourism and animal feed production. She pledged support from the Botswana High Commission in bringing investors to the proposed summit. According to a statement issued by the two commissioners, the meeting was part of broader consultations with diplomatic missions to secure international participation and investment for the event.
The planned summit aims to provide a platform for investors to explore opportunities in agriculture, livestock production, animal feed manufacturing and related businesses across Edo State. Animal feed production is viewed as a critical component of livestock development, as access to affordable and quality feed can improve productivity and reduce production costs for farmers. Agro-tourism offers another avenue for growth by combining agricultural activities with tourism to create additional income streams and support rural enterprises.
The engagement with Botswana reflects Edo State's strategy to build international partnerships capable of attracting capital, technical expertise and commercial participation in its agricultural and livestock sectors. The state government continues to consult with other diplomatic missions as it works toward launching the investment summit.
