Tanzania's government has committed to modernising its postal sector through improved policies, laws and regulations alongside investment in digital systems and infrastructure. Deputy Minister for Communication and Information Technology Dr Switbert Mkama made the pledge during World Post Day celebrations in Dar es Salaam on Friday. The government will support the expansion and upgrading of post offices, delivery networks, digital platforms and the National Physical Addressing System to respond to technological advances, e-commerce growth and shifting customer expectations, he said.
The modernisation drive aims to create a postal network that serves Tanzania's businesses and citizens more effectively. Dr Mkama said a strong postal sector requires modern infrastructure, effective use of technology and close cooperation among stakeholders. He urged postal operators to strengthen parcel-tracking systems and improve the interoperability of their systems to facilitate information exchange while protecting customer data.
An integrated postal network could improve operational efficiency and service quality while helping small and medium-sized businesses expand their online operations, Dr Mkama said. Such improvements could also create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth by facilitating domestic and international trade. The Tanzania Posts Corporation Director of Marketing and Sales Ferdinand Kabyemela acknowledged government support had enabled the corporation to strengthen its services and improve delivery efficiency.
This year's World Post Day celebrations, held under the theme "One Postal Network, Infinity Possibilities", also featured a letter-writing competition that attracted 1,333 primary and secondary school students, comprising 508 boys and 825 girls, with Iringa Region recording the highest participation.
