MTN Uganda launches satellite internet service for remote businesses

MTN Uganda has begun offering Starlink satellite connectivity to businesses and institutions in areas lacking conventional mobile or fibre coverage.

MTN Uganda has launched MTN Starlink for Business, a satellite connectivity service targeting organisations in remote, underserved and hard-to-reach locations across the country. The company demonstrated the service at Libra International School in Zirobwe, where connectivity challenges had previously hindered the school's ability to integrate technology into teaching, research, administration and parent communication. As an authorised reseller of Starlink products, MTN Uganda combines Starlink's Low-Earth-Orbit satellite technology with local implementation, account management and customer support.

Sylvia Mulinge, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Uganda, said the launch reflected the company's commitment to making connectivity more accessible. "At MTN, we believe that where you are located should not determine how far you can go. Through our partnership with Starlink, we are combining Low-Earth-Orbit satellite technology with MTN's local implementation, account management and customer support to serve enterprises in remote, underserved and hard-to-reach areas," Mulinge said. She noted that the solution was designed to complement MTN's existing connectivity services, giving businesses flexibility to use satellite connectivity as a primary connection, a backup to existing services or for rapid deployment when needed.

Libra International School illustrates the practical application of the service. The school had struggled to secure reliable internet because of its location outside main urban centres, and previous connectivity attempts proved inefficient despite significant costs. Mr Sekabembe William, Director of Libra International School, said the school had tried different solutions including boosters that failed to meet requirements. "Connectivity was a major challenge for us because we are an international school focused on using technology to improve learning," he explained. Since starting a proof of concept with Starlink through MTN, he said the school has seen substantial improvements, with students now able to conduct research more easily and communication with parents improved through faster systems access.

Sekabembe described the network speed as "fantastic" and its reliability as "top of the range", with connectivity now available across the campus including computer rooms. The improved connection has made online learning resources more accessible to teachers and students, and the school's examination and management systems are working more efficiently. Beyond education, the service is designed to serve organisations in healthcare, tourism, agriculture, mining, energy, construction and humanitarian operations, particularly where teams, facilities or projects are located beyond conventional connectivity infrastructure.

MTN Starlink for Business forms part of MTN Uganda's wider connectivity offering, which includes mobile and fibre services, managed networks and other digital solutions. The launch supports MTN Uganda's Ambition 2030 strategy, which focuses on leading digital solutions for Africa's progress.
