Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, revealed that he invested $1 million in Afrinvest West Africa following the 2008 global financial crisis without any written agreements or formal terms. He said he wired the funds to the company's account with only a request for repayment when business conditions improved, trusting the leadership of Afrinvest Group Managing Director Dr Ike Chioke to honour the commitment.
The investment has now been repaid with interest after Chioke and senior management visited Elumelu recently to thank him. Elumelu said the repayment demonstrated integrity and justified the confidence he had placed in Chioke's ability to navigate the firm through difficult times. He noted that Afrinvest has since grown into a financial services institution with more than 200 employees and six subsidiaries.
Elumelu used the experience to encourage other successful Africans to support promising entrepreneurs, particularly during uncertain periods. He argued that access to capital and confidence can transform business outcomes and that those with resources have a responsibility to invest in others. He warned that failing to repay trust alongside capital could discourage investors from supporting future entrepreneurs.
The billionaire emphasised that Africa could achieve broader prosperity if wealth and opportunity were distributed beyond a privileged few, and that single acts of belief in individuals could change the trajectory of businesses and careers.
