Kenya launches Sh221m medical college hostel in West Pokot

President William Ruto has opened a student accommodation project at the Kenya Medical Training College as the government expands healthcare worker training.

President William Ruto launched a Sh221 million hostel at the Kenya Medical Training College in Kapenguria, West Pokot County on Friday. The 580-bed facility, built under the Affordable Housing Programme, will increase student accommodation at the college. The government also plans to add 20 classrooms to expand the institution's training capacity for healthcare workers.

The projects support the government's push to expand medical personnel training in order to deliver Universal Health Coverage. According to information provided during the President's visit, about 270,000 West Pokot residents have registered with the Social Health Authority.

During the tour, Ruto also inspected other developments in the county. A 35-kilometre road project connecting Kopasi River, Lomut, Sigor and Marich Pass is 60 percent complete at a cost of Sh4.4 billion. The Sh147 million Makutano Modern Market is 69 percent complete and is expected to be ready in December 2026.

The government plans to allocate an additional Sh300 million in January 2027 to build another market after determining that the current facility cannot accommodate the growing number of traders.
