Kenya seizes subsidised fertiliser diverted for resale

Anti-counterfeit authority impounds 323 bags worth over Sh1.6 million allegedly repackaged and sold at commercial prices.

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority has seized 323 bags of fertiliser valued at more than Sh1.6 million in Kakamega County following suspicions that government-subsidised farm inputs were diverted and resold at full commercial prices. The operation took place in Matungu on 16 October, resulting in the impounding of two lorries and packaging equipment, with two drivers arrested.

The ACA said preliminary investigations suggest the fertiliser was diverted from the government subsidy scheme and repackaged in counterfeit Falcon-branded bags for sale to farmers. ACA Executive Director Robi M. King'a said the suspected diversion undermines government efforts to make farm inputs affordable and accessible to farmers.
