Former CBN deputy governor Sarah Alade joins JPMorgan board

Sarah Alade, who led the central bank in 2014, has been appointed a non-executive director of JPMorgan's new merchant bank in Nigeria.

Sarah Omotunde Alade, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and acting governor in 2014, has been appointed an independent non-executive director of JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited. The appointment brings her decades of experience in monetary policy, financial markets and economic management to the proposed institution as JPMorgan moves to establish a merchant banking presence in Africa's largest economy.

Alade spent 24 years at the CBN before retiring in March 2017, holding senior positions that gave her broad exposure to Nigeria's financial system. She began her career in 1977 at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in Kwara State, then moved into academia at the University of Ilorin lecturing in accounting and finance. She joined the CBN in 1993 as an assistant director in the Research Department and rose through the ranks, heading the State Government Finance Office, Federal Government Finance Office and Fiscal Analysis Division. In May 2004, she became director of Banking Operations, chaired the board of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System and served as secretary of the National Payments System Committee.

Alade was appointed deputy governor in charge of Economic Policy on March 26, 2007, overseeing economic research, monetary policy, trade and exchange, statistics and financial markets. On February 20, 2014, she became acting governor following the removal of then governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, holding the position until a substantive governor was appointed. Her work at the CBN included contributions to monetary and credit policy proposals, Nigeria's medium-term economic programme and engagements with the International Monetary Fund on economic policy programmes.

Following her retirement, Alade returned to public service in November 2019 when former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed her Special Adviser to the President on Finance and the Economy, with her office based in the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning. She has also been associated with the African Economic Research Consortium, serving on its board and chairing its Programme Committee. Alade holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) obtained in 1976, a Master of Commerce from the University of Melbourne in 1983, and a PhD in Management Science from the University of Ilorin in 1991. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Operational Research, the Nigerian Statistical Association, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and the Nigerian Economic Society.

As an independent non-executive director, Alade's responsibilities will centre on board-level oversight and strategic guidance rather than day-to-day management. Merchant banking activities generally include corporate finance, capital raising, financial advisory services and other specialised services subject to regulatory approval and the scope of the institution's licence. Her appointment comes as JPMorgan seeks to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria, a move that could deepen competition in corporate and investment banking and expand the range of services available to businesses and institutional clients. Her experience in banking operations, financial markets and public finance could contribute to the board's consideration of Nigeria's economic and regulatory environment.
