Tanzania pledges stronger UK ties to boost economic transformation

Tanzania's Prime Minister has committed to deepening cooperation with the UK and international partners to support the country's long-term development strategy.

Tanzania has pledged to strengthen cooperation with the UK and international partners to support its economic transformation, Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba said during meetings in London over the weekend. Dr Nchemba, who is on a five-day working visit, met with investors and representatives of international financial institutions, commercial banks and development organisations at Chatham House. He conveyed greetings from President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan and reaffirmed the government's commitment to deepening relations with the UK.

Tanzania is implementing Dira 2050, a long-term development strategy that aims to transform the economy and improve people's livelihoods, Dr Nchemba said. The government is working to move away from exporting raw agricultural and mineral products towards domestic processing, manufacturing and value addition. Dr Nchemba stressed that economic growth should be inclusive, create jobs and ensure benefits reach a wider section of the population.

In meetings with Standard Bank and the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), Dr Nchemba discussed investment opportunities and infrastructure financing. PIDG, supported by six governments including the UK, provided a 50 million US dollar guarantee to CRDB Bank five years ago, which was increased to 100 million US dollars in 2025. The discussions focused on expanding PIDG's investments in Tanzania and strengthening public-private partnerships in infrastructure projects.
