Tanzania supports a World Bank strategy aimed at helping member countries create employment opportunities, particularly for young people, and strengthen the private sector to drive economic development, the country's Finance Minister Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar said. He made the remarks in Bangkok during a meeting of the World Bank's Africa Group I constituency, held alongside the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Annual Meetings.
Ambassador Omar said employment remained a priority for Tanzania and Africa given the continent's large youth population. He noted that the government would continue investing in education and skills development to prepare young people for work and self-employment. He highlighted agriculture, mining and mineral processing, and tourism as sectors with significant potential to generate jobs.
The minister stressed the importance of ensuring that major development projects in Tanzania provide opportunities for the private sector, particularly domestic investors, to participate and benefit. Dr Zarau Wendeline Kibwe, the World Bank's Executive Director for Africa Group I, urged member countries to prioritise employment across all development sectors. Dr Kibwe, a Tanzanian national, completed her two-year term in October 2026 and received commendations from World Bank Governors for her performance.
