Tanzania ports handle record cargo in strong year for trade

Cargo volumes at Tanzania ports jumped to 39.9 million tonnes in the 2025/26 financial year, up from 32.7 million tonnes the previous year.

The Tanzania Ports Authority said the sharp increase in cargo handled demonstrates the growing importance of the Central Corridor for both domestic and regional trade. The authority's representative, Dr George Fasha, told a meeting of traders and transport stakeholders in Mwanza that the ports' role in connecting Tanzania to regional markets has strengthened.

However, officials warned that the ports face challenges that could harm their competitive position. Dr Fasha said traders and transport operators need to work together to remove non-tariff barriers that slow cargo movement and push up shipping costs. The Ilemela District Commissioner added that sustaining growth requires faster cargo handling, lower costs and better coordination between different transport modes.

Planners expect the Standard Gauge Railway connecting Dar es Salaam to Mwanza to create fresh opportunities for freight once complete. Dr Fasha said the rail link would improve connections between rail and water transport, making it easier to move cargo to and from regional destinations. Officials also identified poor coordination between institutions, delays in information sharing and gaps in transport services as obstacles that need addressing.
