Nigeria spent N5.28 trillion servicing domestic debt between January and June 2026, the Debt Management Office said. Interest and rental payments accounted for N4.95 trillion of this amount, while the Federal Government paid N333.96 billion in principal repayments on promissory notes during the period.
Conventional Federal Government bonds and Treasury Bills formed the largest part of the government's domestic interest burden. The DMO figures also showed that the government paid N92.29 billion on Federal Government Sukuk rentals, N8.90 billion on Federal Government Savings Bonds and N5.56 billion in green bond interest payments.
The scale of domestic debt service reflects the challenge Nigeria faces in managing rising debt obligations while funding infrastructure and other government priorities. Nigeria's total debt service rose to around N16 trillion in 2025, driven by higher domestic interest payments and sustained external obligations.
