Tanzania has made progress in carbon trading, with six projects now at the stage of producing carbon credits to promote green investment and environmental conservation, according to Engineer Hamad Yussuf Masauni, Minister of State in the Vice-President's Office. Speaking at the Africa Carbon Markets Forum 2026 in Kigali on October 14, Masauni said the government had strengthened policy and institutional frameworks to ensure transparency in carbon projects and deliver benefits to local communities.
The government amended the Environmental Management Act in 2025, which allowed the establishment of the National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC). This centre will oversee project registration and verify carbon trading outcomes. Masauni called on African countries to work together with governments, investors and financial institutions to raise more capital and speed up projects that benefit both the environment and local communities.
The NCMC Chief Executive Officer, Kathryn Kigaraba, said the forum offered a chance to discuss ways to increase investment and build a credible carbon market. The Director General of the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), Dr Immaculate Semesi, committed to continued cooperation with NCMC in managing carbon projects for public benefit and environmental protection.
