CBN seeks Chinese bank investment in Nigerian financial markets

The central bank governor has identified naira-denominated instruments and broader market participation as opportunities to deepen financial ties with China.

Nigeria's central bank is looking to attract investment from Chinese financial institutions into Nigerian markets as a way to strengthen economic ties between the two countries. During meetings with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso outlined how greater participation by Chinese banks could broaden the relationship beyond existing trade patterns.

Cardoso told ICBC's leadership that Nigeria now offered a more predictable environment for investment and enterprise, with stronger financial foundations than before. He said the central bank's priority was to consolidate stability and use it to develop deeper markets, attract stronger investment and achieve sustainable economic growth. According to the CBN, Nigeria currently experiences significant trade-related payments flowing to China, but comparatively limited export proceeds and investment flows coming into Nigeria, creating an imbalance in the financial relationship.

The governor identified several practical areas for action. He said ICBC could help connect its institutional networks and international reach to Nigerian investment opportunities, while also helping identify and address barriers that might prevent Chinese participation in Nigerian financial markets. Cardoso stressed that the aim was not simply to make transactions between the two economies easier, but to create conditions for increased transaction volumes, greater investment and stronger financial flows in both directions.

For the CBN's part, Cardoso committed to maintaining a credible, transparent and well-functioning financial environment while working with counterparts to address regulatory and institutional barriers. He proposed practical priorities and designated teams to take the discussions forward, with the measure of success being greater transaction volumes, broader market participation and a more balanced financial relationship between Nigeria and China.

For savers, borrowers and investors in Nigeria, increased Chinese participation in local financial markets could potentially broaden the sources of capital available and create new investment opportunities.
