Tanzania backs date palm research to cut imports

The government is supporting agricultural research into date palm cultivation to reduce imports and create income opportunities for farmers in drought-prone regions.

Tanzania's government has committed to backing research into date palm farming as part of efforts to lower import dependence and generate new income streams for farmers in areas vulnerable to drought. The Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute is leading the research, which aims to determine whether date palms can be successfully grown in Tanzania's semi-arid regions.

The initiative could benefit farmers in drought-prone areas by providing an alternative crop that generates revenue while reducing the country's need to import dates from overseas.
