Kenya's cabinet has approved Sh23.74 billion in payments to settle verified government pending bills of Sh50 million and below. The payment will cover 28,726 claims from suppliers and contractors, representing 98 percent of the 29,257 bills that were recommended for settlement after verification.
The Pending Bills Verification Committee had reviewed 115,617 claims worth Sh664.8 billion in total and identified 29,257 claims valued at Sh155.34 billion as eligible for payment. Some suppliers have been waiting since 2005 to receive their money.
The National Treasury will oversee the payments, with priority given to micro, small and medium enterprises, particularly those owned by women, young people and persons with disabilities. The government said bills exceeding Sh50 million will be paid progressively.
