Nigeria waterways authority pledges infrastructure and safety push

NIWA's acting head says maritime policies must translate to safer waterways and economic growth through coordinated work with states and stakeholders.

The National Inland Waterways Authority has committed itself to converting maritime policies into concrete action that will deliver safer waterways, dependable infrastructure and sustainable economic expansion. Alhaji Yusuf Girei, the acting managing director, made the pledge while delivering remarks at the 2026 World Maritime Day celebration, which took the theme 'From policy to practice: Powering excellence'. He commended those involved in advancing Nigeria's maritime sector and stressed that strong policies only create value when they lead to tangible outcomes.

Girei outlined NIWA's priorities as improved navigation, tightened safety standards, modernised facilities and protection of the waterways that support many people's livelihoods. He said the authority would work alongside state governments, industry participants, host communities and development partners to achieve these goals. The acting managing director also highlighted that excellence in maritime operations requires skilled workers, sound regulation, investment in innovation and a commitment to safety and sustainability across all activities.

Girei noted that building a competitive, inclusive and future-ready maritime sector demands collective effort. 'By working together, we can build a maritime sector that is competitive, inclusive and prepared for the future,' he said. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, and other government officials attended the event, which also featured industry leaders and members of the diplomatic corps.

The celebration included an award presentation for a primary school children's essay competition sponsored by NIWA. Idris Jibril Oladimeji of Holy Cross Primary School in Lagos won first place and received N200,000 in cash and a laptop computer. The event underscores efforts to engage young Nigerians in maritime awareness and development.
