Tanzania wins African praise for water sector investment

African leaders highlighted Tanzania's funding and management of water projects at a continental meeting in Angola this week.

Tanzania has been recognised by African leaders for its commitment to investing in and managing the water sector, with the government's approach to water projects singled out for praise at a high-level meeting in Luanda, Angola on October 22, 2026. The continental gathering brought together African presidents, foreign affairs ministers and water ministers to discuss water's role in addressing resource-related challenges and preventing conflicts across the continent.

Tanzania's delegation to the meeting was led by Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, who represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The delegation also included Water Minister Jumaa Hamidu Aweso and government experts. African leaders commended Tanzania's prioritisation of the water sector under President Samia's administration, pointing to the government's allocation of funds for water projects and its strengthened management and oversight systems designed to expand access to safe and clean water across the country.

Tanzania has made measurable progress in extending water services to communities that previously struggled to access reliable supplies. Work is ongoing to reach additional communities as the country continues expanding its water infrastructure coverage. The country is leveraging the continental meeting to showcase its water sector achievements and demonstrate its contribution to regional cooperation, particularly in the joint management of shared river basins, rivers and lakes with neighbouring nations.

The October 22 meeting, held under the theme 'Water as a Link for Peace', focused on strengthening governance of Africa's transboundary water resources. Discussions covered water diplomacy, joint management of shared water resources, community participation, the involvement of women and young people, climate change, migration and conflict, as well as investment in water infrastructure and capacity building. African leaders stressed that investment in water infrastructure and cooperation among countries in managing shared resources have become increasingly important as climate change and competing demands place growing pressure on water supplies.

For Tanzanian savers, borrowers and businesses, the government's demonstrated commitment to water sector investment signals ongoing public spending in infrastructure that could affect fiscal policy and economic priorities.
