Tanzania-Zambia power project reaches 92% completion

A major electricity infrastructure project spanning Tanzania and Zambia is on track to finish by the end of 2026, with officials saying improved power supply will support economic growth in the Tunduma region.

The TAZA Project, which aims to strengthen electricity infrastructure in Tunduma and surrounding areas, has reached 92 per cent completion and is expected to finish in December 2026, according to Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba. Makamba made the remarks during a visit by Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi to inspect project progress across various sites.

Makamba said reliable electricity was vital for expanding businesses, increasing production and supporting wider economic activities. She stated that the ongoing infrastructure improvements would tackle power supply challenges and create better conditions for residents to work efficiently. The government is monitoring progress closely to ensure the project delivers intended benefits to people in Tunduma and neighbouring areas.

Engineer Innocent Luoga, Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy, said the ministry would continue supervising contractors to ensure work is completed on schedule and meets required standards. He added that this oversight would help guarantee residents ultimately receive improved and reliable electricity services.
