Heavy rains flood Uganda road, disrupting farm trade

Transport along a key route in Mityana District has been disrupted by flooding, raising concerns among farmers and traders moving agricultural produce to market.

Heavy rains caused rivers and streams to overflow along the Busunju-Mityana Road in Ssekanyonyi Town Council, Mityana District, on Tuesday, submerging sections of the road and making travel difficult for motorists, pedestrians and traders. The flooding has disrupted movement between Ssekanyonyi and Mityana, affecting residents who depend on the route to reach markets and essential services.

Farmers and traders transporting agricultural produce to markets face particular difficulties, with concerns that delayed shipments could lead to financial losses. Membe John, a resident of Ssekanyonyi, said the road had appeared repeatedly in government budget plans over several years but remained in poor condition. He called for lasting rehabilitation rather than temporary repairs.

Joseph Luzige, the Mityana District LC5 chairperson, said the road falls under the Ministry of Works and Transport. The district is exploring interventions to help residents maintain access while awaiting action from the ministry, he added.

Residents are calling on authorities to rehabilitate the road to restore reliable transport and ease the movement of agricultural goods to markets, saying a lasting solution would reduce disruptions during heavy rains and improve connectivity between the two towns.
