Lagos exchange gets licence to trade petroleum products

The LCFE aims to bring transparency and efficiency to Nigeria's downstream petroleum market through organised commodity trading.

The Lagos Commodities and Futures Exchange has received a licence from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to facilitate trading and clearing of petroleum liquids, positioning itself as a bridge between the physical petroleum market and Nigeria's capital markets.

The move comes as Nigeria's petroleum sector undergoes significant change, including downstream deregulation and growth in domestic refining capacity. The LCFE said these shifts have created demand for reliable market data, clear pricing and effective price discovery mechanisms.

The exchange plans to establish a structured, technology-enabled trading platform where petroleum products can be traded through organised processes with appropriate trading, clearing and settlement support. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Akin Akeredolu-Ale said the aim was to strengthen price discovery and market information while drawing greater involvement from refiners, petroleum marketers, traders, financial institutions and investors.

For Nigerian businesses and investors, this means access to a more transparent and organised marketplace for petroleum products, potentially reducing pricing uncertainty and improving decision-making across the downstream sector.
