Kenya receives 2 million dollars from China for health and drought

China has provided a cash grant to support Kenya's response to Ebola and drought.

Kenya has received a 2 million U.S. dollar cash grant from China to support its Ebola response and drought relief efforts. The handover took place on Thursday at the National Treasury in Nairobi, with Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan, National Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo and Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni attending the ceremony, where both sides signed a handover certificate.

Half of the grant, totalling 1 million U.S. dollars, will strengthen Ebola virus disease preparedness infrastructure in counties identified as very high-risk and high-risk areas, according to the Chinese government. The other 1 million U.S. dollars will help the Kenyan government manage the impact of drought across the country.

The Chinese ambassador said the grant reflects the friendly relationship between the Chinese and Kenyan governments and peoples. Guo indicated that China intends to deepen development cooperation with Kenya through the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Global Development Initiative.
