Tanzania committee urges stronger push for Made in Tanzania brand

Lawmakers want the trade authority to intensify promotion efforts to help local manufacturers gain recognition in regional and international markets.

Tanzania's Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industries, Trade, Agriculture and Livestock has called on the Tanzania Trade Development Authority to ramp up promotion of the "Made in Tanzania" brand as a tool for expanding market access for domestic producers. The committee, led by Chairman Deodatus Mwanyika, made the appeal after reviewing implementation reports from the Ministry of Industry and Trade covering the financial years from 2023/24 to 2025/26.

Mr Mwanyika said the brand needed to become synonymous with quality, reliability and competitiveness across regional and international markets. "The 'Made in Tanzania' mark is an important tool for building buyer confidence, adding value to locally produced goods and expanding opportunities in regional and international markets," he said. The committee acknowledged that TanTrade has already worked to connect local producers with markets and build traders' capacity, but insisted more aggressive promotion is necessary to drive wider adoption of the national mark.

The committee chairman stressed that stronger brand promotion must be accompanied by tangible improvements in product quality, packaging, compliance with international standards and consistency of production to meet export market requirements. He noted that while registration figures show participation in the initiative, expanding uptake and maintaining consistent standards remain critical to achieving broader commercial impact.

TanTrade Director General Ephraim Mafuru said the authority would increase the number of local producers adopting the "Made in Tanzania" mark while working to strengthen confidence in the quality and competitiveness of their products. For local businesses seeking to sell beyond Tanzania's borders, success will depend on combining stronger brand visibility with reliable production and packaging that meets international market demands.
