Tanzania coast region targets 95% rural electricity by year end

The Coast Region commissioner said electricity access in rural areas will reach 95 per cent by the end of 2026 as authorities upgrade infrastructure.

Electricity availability across rural areas in Tanzania's Coast Region is expected to reach 95 per cent by the end of 2026, the region's commissioner said. Stanslaus Nyongo made the statement while welcoming Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba to inspect work at the Hongwang Tanzania industrial park in Bagamoyo District. The regional administration is pushing the infrastructure improvement as part of broader efforts to attract investment and support industrial development.

The commissioner said authorities are also working with the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency to improve roads leading to investment areas, making them more accessible to businesses. Improvements in water and electricity services are intended to support industrial activities and create a more favourable environment for investors, Mr Nyongo added. He said the region was honoured to contribute to the country's Vision 2050 ambition of building a one trillion US dollar economy by 2050, with industrial development playing an important role in achieving that goal.

The Coast Region currently has 1,768 industries, including 503 large-scale and 258 small-scale industries, as well as approximately 35 registered industrial parks. Mr Nyongo said the regional administration would continue collaborating with government institutions and private-sector stakeholders to strengthen investment, create employment opportunities and improve people's livelihoods. He credited the government and President Samia Suluhu Hassan for putting in place policies that create a conducive investment environment, saying this has encouraged investors to continue moving to the region.

For savers and businesses in Tanzania, improved rural electricity access and road infrastructure mean better conditions for industrial investment and economic activity in the Coast Region.
