African Union launches new credit rating agency

A new agency has been established to improve how African governments and companies are assessed for creditworthiness.

The African Union has set up the Africa Credit Rating Agency to tackle gaps in credit rating services across the continent. The agency will assess the creditworthiness of African sovereigns and corporations, providing ratings that investors use when deciding whether to lend money or buy bonds.

The move addresses longstanding concerns about the availability and quality of credit ratings for African borrowers. Investors evaluating African government and corporate debt will now have access to ratings from this dedicated regional agency.
