Kenya's tax revenue climbs 14.85% in September to 258bn shillings

Tax collections rose sharply in the third month of the financial year, though the government continued to rely heavily on borrowing.

Kenya collected Sh258.31 billion in tax revenue during September, up 14.85 per cent compared with the same month last year, according to the National Treasury's fiscal outturn update. The rise was part of improved revenue performance in the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.

The government still depended on borrowing and external support to cover its spending. Domestic borrowing contributed Sh101.72 billion, while external loans and grants provided Sh54.05 billion. Non-tax revenue reached Sh13.95 billion.
